We weren’t fans of the original Fatal1ty Gaming Headset. The design was fine, but the audio quality wasn’t. Creative is back to give it another try with the HS-1000 USB version. This time the headset doesn’t include regular 1/8-inch headphone and mic plugs that go into your sound card or integrated audio, but rather a simple USB connection.

The downside is that, if you spent a good chunk of change on a sound card, this headset bypasses all that. The upside is that the host-based X-Fi audio driver Creative uses for this USB headset is quite good.

Cosmetically, the HS-1000 very closely mimics the older model. The ear cups are perhaps a little too small and the spring tension perhaps a little too tight for those with large heads, but it is otherwise fairly comfortable. The flexible mic boom is detachable, and can be bent into all kinds of positions for perfect placement. (Please, stop breathing into the mic. You know who you are.)

The in-line volume and microphone mute switch is small and light, so it doesn’t tug down on the cord. Unfortunately, Creative has opted for volume up/down buttons instead of a dial—so when the headset is far too quiet or loud and you want to quickly change the volume, it’s hard to find the proper button and press it a bunch of times.

The best part of the headset is the X-Fi host-based driver stack Creative uses. No, it doesn’t give you all the same modes and features of the X-Fi sound cards, and of course it doesn’t feature an audio processor to offload processing from the CPU. But the virtual surround CMSS-3D, X-Fi Crystalizer, and ambient EAX effects algorithms are tried and true, and they sound great.

Audio quality seems improved over the previous Fatal1ty headset as well. Both the earphone and microphone quality seems improved. Neither are up to the quality of far more expensive headsets like the Astro A40 Audio System, but for an $80 headset it sounds pretty good.

One glitch in our testing—on one of our test systems, the audio output was so incredibly loud that setting the system volume above 15% or so would deafen you. It’s probably a driver bug, perhaps some sort of interaction with our integrated audio drivers, but makers of USB headsets have to worry about this stuff. It’s a headset, and it needs to exist alongside the drivers you use to drive your speakers.

Creative Fatal1ty Sound Card

In all, an improvement over the first Fatal1ty headset and a good option for those that want a simple USB headset under $100.
